In Clean Air We Fly was the name of Kaffe Matthews’s dynamic sound installation that Magnificent Revolution had the pleasure to power by bikes. Eight speakers were mounted around the Square for cyclists to power. Kaffe Matthews sat at a laptop mixing the music between them.
We thank all those 100s of people taking part in this pedal power adventure! The installation ran pretty much continuously for the whole nine hours. Even Kaffe was impressed with people’s will and endurance not to let the sound die. Just like with anything new and experimental there were few hick ups and hurdles to cross but we got there in the end. The morning rain didn’t help our set up but luckily Phil, our brand spanking new Magrevette (meaning Mag Rev volunteer) was on board to lend a hand. Go Phil!
Ahhhhh, and I have to mention the kids! They were superb, pushing the bike to the limit, pedaling like mad. Some of the children from Colvestone and Shacklewell Dalston Primary Schools that made the recordings composed by Kaffe came down to power the installation themselves, so completing the full cycle. All around a good experience! If you wish to find out more about other artist and scientist collaborations exploring air pollution, health and climate change visit Invisible Dust website.
