For the launch of Hinterland 2009, Magnificent Revolution worked alongside Annexinema to produce another ‘Cycle Powered Cinema’. Annexinema have curated a programme featuring John Cage, Margaret Tait, Fernando Sanchez, John Smith, Mischa Leinkauf & Matthias Wermke, Chris Marker, John Chapman & Frank Simeone, Ben Rivers, George Barber, Emily Richardson, Matt Hulse & Joost Van Veen plus live music from Zelig.
The event was a success, 300 people showed up to join us under the Clifton Bridge in Nottingham by the river Trent. The cinema made a great use of an unused space. It just goes to show what a small proportion of the space that surrounds us we tap into for cultural experience and connection with nature. At this particular event nature and culture ran hand in hand: part industrial wasteland, part natural wilderness – a hinterland in itself was a backdrop for the screen. Magnificent Revolution only wishes that more of such delights are at the hand of people. Most of us are too used to conventional spaces, Odeons and multi-complex cinemas for our film experience but Hinterland brought the beauty of dusk and breath of fresh air to the cinematographic experience. And of course…. bicycles!
